6th Grade Students Get Hands On With Chemical Change

October 3, 2018

For the last two weeks the 6th grade students at KMS have been learning all about chemical change. I spoke to both Science teachers about what makes chemical change so much fun.

“The TEKS calls for the students to recognize several signs so that they can differentiate between chemical and physical changes. The best way for them to recognize the signs is to have the students do their own experiments see they can see things change right in front of their eyes. It almost feels like a magic show except it’s real…it’s Science!” said Mr. Solis.

Mr. Quintero added, “I think Mr. Solis and I get just as excited as the students. We set up 6 different stations where the students see a different chemical reaction in each one. They have to recognize them and then move on to the next. On other days we had demonstrations so we could do the dangerous experiments. It was a blast.”

The students finally got to wear their goggles and aprons which really added to the learning process. Studies have shown that students who wear lab gear tend to perform better during labs and take it more seriously. It looks like the 6th graders know how to seriously have fun while they learn.
